Jack Meteyer was born John Hillard in Pittsfield, Massachusetts on October 5, 1928. He was number four of six children. In 1930 he and four of his siblings were placed in an orphanage. Jack was the only one to be adopted. His adoptive parents, Oscar and Mary Meteyer, saw to it that he received love and a good education. His siblings were not as fortunate.

In 1947 Jack joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, from which he retired as a Chief Master Sergeant (E-9) after 29 years of service. He worked for the Boeing Company in Seattle from 1976 until he retired in 1991.

In 1981 Jack began researching his biological family's history. He found his oldest brother in a Bedford, Massachusetts VA Hospital - dying from Huntington's Disease. Eventually, his mother, his two brothers and a sister died of HD. Since HD is inherited, Jack resorted to being tested. The result was negative. HD does not skip generations; therefore, none of his children or future generations will be in danger of inheriting it.

Jack sends Don off to walk from Puget Sound to Mount Rainier
Jack and his wife, Nadyne, live in Auburn, Washington, where Jack is more athletic now than ever before. In 1995, at the age of sixty-seven, he competed in the Hawaiian Ironman Thriathlon.

In 2002 Nadyne discovered a slightly eccentric man named Don walking laps around Auburn's Game Farm Park. Jack and Don became fast friends, and Jack became an escort for Don as he traversed the Cascade Mountains for Maria Federici in 2004. When Don completed his 2006 walk around the state of Ohio, Jack asked Don if he would do his next walk for HD. Don agreed.

Jack and Nadyne are blessed with five children and nine grandchildren. They are actively involved as volunteers in their church and in community service. Jack hopes to grow old in the presence of his children, his grandchildren, and alongside Nadyne--his best friend and bride of fifty years.

Of this 13,000 mile HD awareness walk, Jack's fervent prayer is, "Lord, look favorably upon this endeavor and bless us with Strength and Wisdom to make this effort a success. Amen!"
